GAO reports even CMS acknowledges Medicare is going broke (fraud is a cause)

Nearly 10% of all Medicare payments are fraudulent or otherwise improper, and the CMS doesn't know how to stop the fraud.  CMS estimates that $48 billion of estimated Medicare outlays of FY2010 $509 billion went to improper payments, including fraudulent ones.   But it is actually worse because this does not take into consideration Part D (drugs).   Kathleen King, director of GAO’s health care team states “However, this improper payment estimate did not include all of the program’s risk since it did not include improper payments in its Part D prescription drug benefit, for which the agency has not yet estimated a total amount.”
